Due to vast research and advancement in the medical field, the hair replacement and restoration methods have become common and we see a large number of people turn to these cosmetic methods to look younger and feel better. With time, people have become resourceful and are ready for cosmetic and other treatments that were considered too expensive or not meant for ordinary people a few years back. Procedures such as plastic surgery and hair transplantation were considered unnatural and therefore unaccepted. Hair transplant surgery provides a permanent solution to the people who opt for a method to regain their confidence and look less in age. Hair transplant procedures are not difficult for the patient since they can be performed in a clinic under local anesthesia while there are no complicated side effects or long term maintenance. However, the same procedure is very technical for the surgeon since it requires a high degree of skill and expertise. The non surgical methods of hair restoration do offer ways to avoid long term routines and follow up sessions, these methods are laser therapy and the use of hair pieces. A hair piece is a patch of hair that suits the color and texture of an individual. These hairs are attached to a semi permeable membrane which is glued to the scalp on the bald patch using a good adhesive. The problem with such hair pieces is that if they are attached to a patch on the scalp that has minimal hair growth, the few hair strands have to be shaved before attaching the piece. In a few days, the shaved hair grows back and causes itching on the scalp. This is why the patient has to keep visiting the clinic, where technicians remove the patch, shave the head and paste it again. Apart from the growing hair, a person may feel irritated since a foreign body is attached to their scalp and may cause discomfort. This is why, with time, people have come to realize that the hair transplant surgery is the most effective method for hair restoration. There are two main ways of hair transplant surgery, one is the strip method and the other is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Strip method involves removal of a strip of hair from an area of good hair growth, usually at the back of the head. This strip is further dissected into smaller units which are then painted onto the bald patch. The FUE method is even more technical since it involves extraction of individual hair follicles that are then planted on the bald patch. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and may be completed in more than one session; depending on the extent of hair loss. The surgeons charge more for FUE treatment due to the manual work involved. Hair transplant surgery is done using scalp hair most of the time but in case of extremely thin hair on the scalp, body hair is used to fill up the bald patches on the scalp. The latest technology of the FUE method is the neograft. This is a mechanical device that extracts hair with a vacuum feature and then plants them on the bald patch. Although the neograft costs less than a manual FUE surgery, people prefer the manual procedure since it is human nature to rely on human judgment more than mechanical devices and robots. The many other hair restoration ways which are non surgical do not produce the same kinds of result that hair transplants give. Hair restoration surgeries were initially done in the 1950s to cover accidental scars or deformed hair gaps due to burns and birthmarks. This procedure proved successful and hence was used as a cosmetic procedure to enhance aesthetic beauty and cover the scalp completely.
Hair replacement systems are becoming popular since people are gaining resources and can afford to focus on aesthetics. It is also due to increasing competition that people concentrate on their appearance and hence turn to the various methods of hair replacement and other cosmetic treatments.
