A baby can lose hair in between 3 to 8 months resulting from the friction of any object like car seat, bed, crib or stroller. With proper attention and diagnosis your kid can be cured.
Hair loss children common causes
Traction alopecia: This alopecia transpires mostly in girls because of tight ponytails or braids. Constant making of tight styles may result in shedding from the hairline which is referred to as traction alopecia. Loosening of ponytails, braids can ease this disease. Antibiotics are also advised to such patients.
Trichotillomania: This type is separated by broken hair of fluctuating length. It is caused by rubbing, plucking, or twisting. It is seen that trichotillomania is prompted by disastrous events or stress. Failing in a class, losing a grandparent, birth of a sibling or divorce of parent could be responsible for this type of harm. If you find your kid pulling his hair, then scolding will not be beneficial. Consoling of kids is required as treatment.
Ringworms of Scalp: If you notice that your child is losing hair from his head in scaly patches then there is a possibility that he/she is suffering from Tinea capitis. It is another name for ringworms of head. It is named as ringworm because a red ring-shaped rash appears on the head of a patient. Oval and round patches are deducted in this disease. Small black heads can be seen on the head from where hair is lost. It can only be confirmed by pertinent examination through a microscope. Tinea capitis is caused by a fungus and hence it is contagious. This is a fungal infection hence a patient should avoid sharing anything that touches his head, from others. Caps, scarves, comb, brush or clips of infected people can spread it. Doctors normally prescribe an antifungal drug and shampoo to cure the ringworm of the scalp.
Telogen effluvium: When there is an interruption in the normal growth cycle of hair due to a tragic event then it is characterized as telogen effluvium. Events like a loss of parent, undertaking of a major surgery or any severe injury could be the reason for the telogen phase. A phase where follicles go in rest and stop growing precipitately. There is no specific cure for telogen effluvium but in most cases it is temporary. Hair regrowth starts about six to 12 months after the incident.
Alopecia areata: This type of damage befalls when the body’s immune system attacks follicles resulting in sudden alopecia. Alopecia areata is dangerous because it can destroy look and image. It can be controlled if diagnosed on time but most likely to reappear. Severe cases of AA may result in “alopecia totalis’’, which is losing hair from the entire scalp. This disease can take the form of “alopecia universalis” too in which kids lose all hairs from his/her body.
To stop this disease from spreading, drugs, ointments and injections are used.
Hair loss due to Vitamin deficiency: A child may lose due to deficiency of some nutrients like vitamin H, D and B. One of the functions of vitamin H is to stimulate new and old follicles so its deficiency can disturb the growth. Hair growth can be disturbed by the amount of zinc in the body too. Nutrition deficiency can easily be conquered by healthy eating. Eating more veggies and less carbs, is the key to healthy living.
Injury on Scalp:
Any blow or burn on the head can also become one of the reasons for significant hair loss. An injury on the scalp can hurt the follicles, resulting in loss at the site of injury. Normally hair starts to regrow once the wound is healed. Timely treatment can save the kid from any permanent damage.
Hypothyroidism: Another possible reason why your child’s hair is falling out could be inactive thyroid. Inactive thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid subsequently causing hypothyroidism. It is checked through a blood test. Drugs that promote hormonal balance are given as treatment.
Typical causes in children are ringworm of scalp (fungus infection), Traction alopecia and Telogen effluvium (stress-related). Out of all these causes, most common is ringworm scalp which can easily be cured by antifungal drugs. Most of the causes are reversible if identified on time.
